Step into a recreated medieval town in Østerlars and travel back to 1300–1500: buildings, crafts, storytelling, live shows and hands-on activities that make history feel real. A brilliant day out for families and anyone who loves castles, knights and Bornholm legends.
The Bornholms Medieval Centre (Bornholms Middelaldercenter) covers around 15 hectares of historical attractions near the Østerlars Round Church – an ideal place to see what everyday life looked like in the Middle Ages.
It’s not just “looking”: in summer you’ll often find outdoor demonstrations and activities, while indoors there are exhibitions and “try it yourself” areas. The centre also offers themed activities and island-wide adventures (including treasure hunts).
One of the main features is Befæstet Stormandsgård – a fortified nobleman’s manor, surrounded by a palisade and gate towers. A tall lookout tower stands at the heart of the site.
Nearby you’ll find Landbobebyggelsen – a reconstruction of a medieval rural settlement, where you can see everyday crafts and the work of “ordinary people” (blacksmith, weaver and more). In season, extra activities often include archery and craft demonstrations.
Inside the buildings you’ll find exhibitions and stories rooted in medieval life. Depending on the season, you may also come across themed displays (for example, pirates) and areas where you can try selected activities yourself.
• walk the medieval village step by step
• watch crafts and “living history” (in season)
• check which temporary exhibitions are available that day
If you’re up for an outdoor adventure, the centre offers treasure hunts around the island: participants receive clues and “tools”, solve riddles and follow trails in different locations on Bornholm.
The hunt starts and finishes at the Medieval Centre in Østerlars, but a big part happens outside the site – a great excuse to discover nature and less obvious places on the island.
A quick “what to see” list – perfect for planning your route on site.
