Hammerhavn → Hammershus (north)
The most “postcard-perfect” stretch: cliffs, caves and fortress ruins seen from the water. A great choice for a guided trip.

Bornholm is one of Denmark’s best destinations for sea kayaking: dramatic cliffs and rock formations in the north, and calmer bays in the south. See where to paddle, how to prepare for conditions, and where to book a tour or rental.
Sea kayaking is one of the most beautiful ways to experience Bornholm: from the water you’ll see cliffs, caves and rocky “heads” that aren’t always accessible from land. In the calmer southern stretches and sheltered bays, paddling is easy and comfortable – great for both beginners and more experienced paddlers.
If you don’t have sea experience, a guided tour is the best option: you’ll get a short briefing, support on the route, and a plan adapted to the day’s conditions.
Three classics: the northern cliffs (most dramatic), the Sandvig area (views + lighthouse) and the calmer south. Choose your stretch based on wind and swell.
The most “postcard-perfect” stretch: cliffs, caves and fortress ruins seen from the water. A great choice for a guided trip.
A cosy base in the north. Paddle towards the cliffs and see the coastline from a true sea-level perspective.
Calmer water and plenty of space to learn. A good pick for your first sea paddle, a family outing, or a short skills session.
1) Forecast: check wind, swell and any warnings. If conditions are strong, choose a sheltered bay or go with a guide.
2) Gear: buoyancy aid, clothing for the water temperature, drinking water + phone in a waterproof case.
3) Plan: paddle with a buddy/group, agree on a simple route plan and a clear return point/time.
4) Cliffs: keep a safe distance from rocks (wind and waves can push you towards shore).
The easiest way to start at sea: a guided tour, a short briefing and a route adjusted to the day’s conditions.
North coast scenery and a view of Hammershus from the water – perfect for a first sea kayaking adventure.
A short, scenic route in the island’s north – great for families and cliff photos from the water.
If you want to paddle independently, choose a single or tandem sea kayak and match your launch spot to conditions (wind, swell, currents).
A classic choice in the north. A good starting point for shorter routes near the cliffs (in suitable conditions).
The island’s south with gentler conditions. Great for learning and relaxed paddling.
Ideal for couples and families. The north is spectacular, but always check conditions first.
Yes – especially in sheltered bays and calmer southern stretches. If it’s your first time paddling at sea, choose a guided tour (brief intro + route adapted to conditions).
Ideally with moderate wind and low swell. Conditions change day to day, so always check the forecast for wind and sea state and choose your route based on wind direction.
The north is the most dramatic: Hammerhavn/Hammershus and the Sandvig area – cliffs and coastal rock formations look incredible from the water. In stronger wind, pick more sheltered bays.
Keep a safe distance from rocks: wind and waves can push you towards shore. Watch for gusts, reflected wave action (clapotis) and changing sea state. If unsure, choose a sheltered route or paddle with a guide.
At minimum: buoyancy aid, clothing suited to the water temperature, a phone in a waterproof case, and drinking water. For longer trips, bring a map/GPS, a small first-aid kit and basic safety items (e.g., a whistle).
Yes – there are rental options (single and tandem) as well as guided tours with an instructor/guide. If you don’t have sea experience, a guided tour is recommended.
