Within Kultippen, you won't find typical establishments or buildings, apart from a few remnants of the former coal industry, represented by scattered mine dumps. The entire area mirrors a moon-like landscape, with a pathway leading directly to the beach. Especially during warm summer evenings, you can marvel at breathtaking sunsets over the Baltic Sea. If you decide to stay overnight, you'll have the opportunity to witness the incredibly enchanting starry sky above Bornholm. Thanks to minimal light pollution, the stars shine brightly in this night sky. The landscape of the coal spoil heap makes you feel like you're on the moon, observing its journey across the night sky.
The history of Kultippen is closely tied to the coal industry that thrived around Hasle in the 1940s. During the coal extraction process, various waste materials such as sand, gravel, clay, and coal dust were separated from the coal itself. These residues were then transported by tipper trucks to the shore and emptied on-site. This activity led to a significant transformation of the landscape, resulting in deep crevices and the absence of vegetation. The place now resembles a barren desert.
The name "Kultippen" derives from the tippers used to deposit the waste materials on the shore.
