There are plenty of places to visit on Bornholm, and museums are definitely one of them. The museums on this Danish island showcase the life of the island and its inhabitants through many interesting and beautifully designed exhibitions. Bornholm's museums range from natural history, geology and history to applied arts. The exhibitions, some of which are very modern, are attractive to both children and adults.

Bornholm Museum was established in 1893 and is one of the oldest historical museums in Denmark. The museum displays a rich collection spanning 10,000 years of Bornholm's history - from the Neolithic to the Cold War (1945-1989).

In the museum, you can admire collections from the history, culture and natural environment of the island. Among the permanent exhibitions, you can see a collection of Bornholm's cabinet clocks, a maritime exhibition that will certainly interest sailing enthusiasts, and an interesting presentation of the Second World War period on Bornholm - the German occupation, followed by bombing and the Soviet occupation until April 1946.

Erichsens Gård in Rønne

A perfectly preserved bourgeois house from the mid-19th century, belonging to the Erichsen family of merit for Bornholm. The house is a story of romantic love between the daughter of Vilhelmina's owners and the famous Danish painter and poet Holger Drachmann. The large garden adjacent to the house, with lots of interesting plants in the "grandma's time" style, is a real pearl of garden culture from that era and an oasis of peace for visitors.

Hjorths Fabrik in Rønne

Established in 1859, it is a protected and still operating ceramic factory, owned for four generations by the Hjorth family of ceramists. Permanent exhibition on the history of Bornholm's ceramics: from the 18th century: potters, producers of earthenware and terracotta, and artists of artistic ceramics. The ability to trace the production process of ceramic products in workshops - live and as information in English, Danish, German and Polish on tablets.

Landbrugsmuseet Melstedgård in Melsted

An old Bornholm farm from the end of the 18th century. Well-preserved residential and farm buildings with original furniture and equipment from that era. Live animals, an orchard, a vegetable garden and old farm machinery, and an exhibition on the history of agriculture in Bornholm. An attraction for the whole family!

Oluf Høst Museet in Gudhjem

Oluf Høst Museet in Gudhjem

The museum is dedicated to Oluf Høst (1884–1966), one of the island's most famous artists, and includes an exhibition of some of his paintings. The museum is housed in a large house known as Norresân, named after the nearby port of Nørresand Havn, on the western tip of Gudhjem. The building has been converted into a museum with three studios: one at home, another in a rocky garden, and a third on the grounds behind the building.

Although there are no railroad tracks on Bornholm, Bornholm has a vibrant railroad history that spanned from 1900 to 1968. At that time, the railway lines of various railway undertakings served three routes. At the railway museum in the port of Nexø, you can see restored locomotives, wagons and track systems.

Bornholms Kunstmuseum - Helligdomsklipperne

Bornholm's Art Museum is located about 6 km north of Gudhjem in one of Denmark's most beautiful and spectacular landscapes - Helligdomsklipperne. The museum building was built in 1993 and extended in 2003 and is considered one of the best in modern Danish architecture. The Bornholm Art Museum has both ancient and modern works of art and crafts among its exhibits.

Bornholms Automobilmuseum in Aakirkeby

Bornholm's Automobile Museum is a small museum just outside Aakirkeby, located on Grammegårdsvej 1 and is one of the city's attractions. Among the many exhibits are some very special ones, such as the bulletproof Cadillac Al Capone, Lincoln X100 (as the model on which John F. Kennedy was shot), Adolf Hitler's parade car, Lincoln Ronald Reagan (born 1972) and George's Cadillac Bush from 2001. We will also see some vintage cars and motorbikes from the former Eastern Bloc and East Germany here.

The Defense Museum of Bornholm in Rønne contains a wealth of items from Bornholm's military history. There are many military vehicles and weapons in the courtyard of the museum that you can test and touch at will. The museum is divided into two floors that cover Bornholm's involvement in armed conflicts from the Middle Ages to the present day.

Gudhjem Museum

Gudhjem Museum

The Gudhjem Museum is located at the top of the city, partly in the old train station building and partly in the new exhibition building. It is a regional museum with collections of paintings by painters living in Gudhjem. In the years 1916–1953 the Gudhjem station of the funicular, which ran from Aakirkeby to Almindingen, operated here.

Moseløkken Stenbrudsmuseum

The museum is located above the still active granite quarry, near the ruins of Hammershus Castle. Granite mining began in this quarry in 1870, when merchants Grønbech and Kurdt from Bornholm saw the potential of the mineral resource. In addition to the old tools, the museum also contains many photos and videos on the historical mining of granite.

Martin Andersen Museum

The beautifully designed small museum in Nexø offers visitors an insight into the modest living conditions of the young writer. In addition, his most important works are presented, especially the book "Pelle the Conqueror", which has autobiographical features and whose film was awarded an Oscar and a "Palme d'Or" in 1988. A small museum has been established in his former house since 1990, where he learns a lot about the life and work of the "writer of the proletariat.

NaturBornholm

NaturBornholm is a modern science center aimed at popularizing knowledge about the geological past and contemporary nature of Bornholm. NaturBornholm was put into operation on May 16, 2000. The 3,800 m² property is one of the largest on the island. The facility was built adjacent to the Klintebakken Hill, which is crossed by the geological boundary. The fault zone was formed 200 million years ago by an earthquake.

Historisk museum Nexø

The museum was opened in 1970. Exhibitions cover the city's maritime past, its German occupation, the Soviet bombing and post-war Russian occupation. It is located in the port part of the city and is housed in a historic sandstone building. The exhibitions document the history of the city, including the periods in the 1940s when it was occupied by the Germans and bombed by the Russians. The museum occupies a building from 1796 that served as the town hall until 1856 when it was replaced by a new building in Købmagergade. An additional storey was added around 1890.

Smokehouse Museum in Hasle

The Hasle Smokehouse consists of two buildings, one of which now houses a museum. Inside, we will see the history from the moment it was built in 1897 and lots of old photos showing the daily work. In the smokehouse, we will learn about the craft of smoking fish in the 18th and 19th centuries. Unfortunately, the smokehouse in the mid-twentieth century shared the fate of most other smokehouses on Bornholm, due to the tightening of sanitary regulations - it stopped working.

Christiansø Museum

Christiansø Museum

The Christiansø Museum is a historical museum on Ertholmene that treats Christiansø as an island fortress. The museum is located in the Little Tower on Frederiksø. The tower was built between 1685-87 as part of the Ertholmene fortifications. The museum houses Ertholmene's collection of regional and local history, as well as an exhibition about the islands as a military fort. On the top floor is a model showing what the fortress looked like in 1855.

Hammershus Besøgscenter

The newly opened Hammershus Visitor Center offers many interesting details about the history of the castle ruins. In particular, the glory days around 1575 are shown - life in the castle, daily life, leisure, construction, etc. The visitor center is linked to the surrounding landscape, despite or because of its modern architecture through a bridge between the past and the future. In addition to the exhibition about the castle, the building has a café and a seminar room. The long outside terrace offers a great view of the castle. From there, a long bridge leads along the ravine to the castle ruins.

Bornholms Tekniske Samling

Bornholm's technical collection is housed in Østre Borregård, a farm that originally belonged to Hammershus. It is an agricultural museum that has everything from toys, radio receivers, hand tools and electrical appliances to agricultural tools and tractors, Everything from the time of our ancestors.
