Nyker

Nyker, with just over 700 inhabitants, is one of the smaller communities on Bornholm. It is situated on the west coast of the island, just a few kilometres from beautiful lakes and the beach in the coastal forest of Blykobbe Plantage. The picturesque village is best known for the "Økologisk Nyker Knækbrød", the annual "Store Legedag", but Nyker's biggest attraction is the historic round church.

In summer, locals and visitors like to come together for sport and social competition at the "Nyker Store Legedag" games festival and for culinary delights at Hasle Heringsfest. Another Bornholm speciality is Nyker Brød, which is baked as a tasty crispbread according to a traditional recipe at Nyker's økologisk bageri.

Ny Kirke - Nyker's round church

Round churches are medieval religious buildings that were not only built for religious reasons but also had important functions in the daily life of the rural population. The round construction provided the best protection against attacks by marauding pirates or gangs. In times of regional conflicts, round churches were turned into well-fortified buildings, while in times of peace they served as religious buildings and municipal warehouses.

Nyker Round Church is the smallest of the round churches on Bornholm and has only two storeys. Its construction dates back to the 12th century. This makes it the youngest of the four-round churches on Bornholm. Inside, a columnar painting made of magnificent frescoes tells the story of Jesus' passion. Both the pulpit and the free-standing bell tower are from the 17th century, while the rune stone in the vestibule is much older than the church itself.
